What is the SUP Directive?

The SUP Directive (Single Use Plastics) is a European Union regulation of 5 June 2019, which aims to reduce the environmental impact of pollution by single-use products containing plastics. Under the regulations, manufacturers are required to use a uniform labelling system on hygiene products that contain synthetic polymers even in trace amounts.

The labelling of products containing plastics shall include:

  • an indication of the plastic content of the product,:
  • a pictogram reminding of the need for proper disposal, i.e. that the product must not be disposed of down the toilet.

Why is SUP labelling so important?

In addition to building consumer awareness of a product, the most important goal is to minimise the release of plastics into the environment. Education on the proper disposal of products reduces the amount of waste going into the environment. It is estimated, that 80-85% of waste in the marine environment in the Union is plastics, of which 50% is single-use plastic items1.. The scale of this problem explains why the SUP Directive is so important for environmental protection.

Products covered and not covered by the SUP Directive

Our experience and product portfolio include a wide range of items, both those that require SUP Directive labelling and products that are completely free of plastics. This allows our business partners to tailor the product to their own needs, standards and end customer expectations.

The role of plastics in hygiene products

The presence of synthetic nonwovens in hygiene products has a utilitarian function. They increase durability, improve absorbency and provide greater tear resistance. As a result, products with SUP have higher functionality, especially in products that require greater durability.

Principles of proper disposal

The SUP Directive emphasises not only the labelling of products, but also the education of consumers on proper waste handling.
The basic principles are:

  • wipes and cloths with SUP should be disposed of in mixed waste,
  • toilet papers without SUP can be disposed of in the standard way,
Our business approach

As a manufacturer of hygiene products, we consistently align our manufacturing and communication processes with the requirements of European law. We ensure that all products covered by the SUP Directive are labelled clearly and in accordance with the applicable standards.

At the same time, we are investing in the development of an SUP-free range that is safe for the environment and meets the high expectations of users. In this way, we are building a portfolio that responds to both consumer needs and increasing regulatory requirements.
